The housing market hates me

Remember that time that we were going to buy a house? Then I decided to postpone everything and get an apartment? I've been living there since march, and Derek moved in a few weeks ago. However, we started looking for houses again back in August. Actually, we looked at the first set of houses on the day we got engaged.

Our original plan was to continue looking for houses outside the city limits, with a good bit of square footage, and a little bit of land - anywhere from 5-10 acres. We knew that living in the city limits in a neighborhood just wouldn't be for us. BUT THEN we cruised around the lake one day admiring all the houses and noticed that a few homes for sale were actually in our price range. So our game plan changed. We looked at one, then two, then three and four lake houses and we finally found the one.

It is the cutest little yellow lakefront house, with a flat lot (which is hard to find on the lake), tons of green grass, some storage options, and a boat ramp. Literally, the perfect house - everything we could have asked for, and they were asking well under our maximum budget. The only hitch was that there was no flooring in the entire house. They were selling the house "as is" so we either had to take it or leave it. We took it.

With our offer accepted we started moving forward with inspections - safety, sewer, termites, electrical - the works. Everything checked out. Our closing date came closer and closer and we had even taken both sets of parents to look at the house - everyone loved it and we were all so excited to be getting our "dream house" on the lake. Sure, there would be work to do, but we knew we could handle it - plus that just meant we would get exactly what we wanted.

One day, however, we got some bad news. The owner of the house had passed away. Without going in to too much detail, everything was put on hold and our contract was now null and void because of the lack of heirs. This was in September.

In the meantime, we've still been looking at homes on the lake, but everything we want is just out of our price range. Everything that falls inside our price range is either falling apart, too small, or too far of a drive. To say that we are disappointed, exhausted, and even a little angry would be an understatement. I mean - what are the chances of losing a house in that way?? Why us? I've asked all those questions but they still haven't gotten us a house.

What we have gotten, is an increase in rent price (by $250!) and a decrease in living space. But we're making it. For some reason people like to keep it a big secret when their looking for houses - maybe it's bad luck or something - but I followed suite, not wanting to jinx myself. So there, in part, is some of the reason that I've been absent the last two months (along with the whole wedding thing). But screw what you're "supposed" to do. I did what I was "supposed" to do and got screwed anyway. Yes, anything can happen, - but guess what, it's most likely going to happen whether you talk about it or not.

So now for the good news: we are moving at the end of the month - we have a house! Only temporarily - a good friend of the family will be renting to me and Derek for as long as we need. We are both SO thrilled to be moving out of this tiny apartment that we've been calling home for the last month. It wasn't so bad when I was there alone, but once my living space halved, it's been a little rough. But for now, we will be thankful for what we do have and continue to wait for our dream house to finally be ours.

House Hunters makes finding a home so easy - why can't it be like that in real life? It's so great that you have a bigger space to move to in the meantime though!

Good luck! House hunting can be hard. Is there no way that they can at least look at the contracts that you guys had before his death?

I'm so sorry to hear this, pumpkin. I know how badly you want a house. Everything happens for a reason...you'll get your perfect home, I just know it!

So sorry you have had such bad luck. We recently found out the house we were renting was going to be sold meaning we have to love - I was devastated at first but can now happily say we are in the most adorable house that is just perfect for us. Your quote is dead one - don't worry that perfect house will come your way!

Oh wow! That sounds terrible. You're right - not many people lose out on houses like that. So you said that the owner had "no heirs". I'm assuming that means that he or she literally had no family left and no will right? If they left the house to anyone in a will, you could negotiate with them. If they literally had no family, no will, no nothing -- then the property would like escheat to the state. There might be some negotiations you could drum up with the authority that deals with property that has escheated. Just thinking out loud here...

House hunting is horrible! I live in tuscaloosa where housing prices are ridiculously high...over $100 a square foot...making it hard to find something not tiny that fits our budget. We looked at a crap ton of houses online and about 30 in person, and nothing was ever "the one". We had looked at a house in a new subdivision and loved it, but it was only 1300 square feet which is small when you plan to have several kids. We finally ended up going back to that subdivision after looking at other houses and talked to the builders about their other options. I'm excited to say we are building a house and will be moving in at the beginning of Decemeber! You got it right that things will eventually fall into place. Don't give up!

I have heard so many horror stories when finding a home, but when you find the right one (and it works out), it makes it all worth it. I'm glad y'all have a temporary fix to your situation - and sending major good vibes your way that y'all find a perfect home soon!

OMG! That is horrible!!! I hope that it comes though sooner rather than late r- or that you find an even better place!

I can totally relate to this. We have been house hunting for almost a year and put in so many offers. One of our offers went pretty far along and I thought it was smooth sailing until it fell through. Since then I don't get excited about it until it is a done deal.

That being said we are hopefully in the final stages of an amazing house, but the waiting until closing sort of drives you crazy.

In hindsight, I am glad we didn't get the original house. I think it would have been more trouble than it was worth. I think everything happens for a reason sometimes.

You will find your dream house soon!

The one positive I can gather from all this is that if the two of you can live together in such close quarters, it'll be a BREEZE living somewhere with space! And I know this is what everyone says and yadda yadda, but the right house will come along when the time is right. Chin up!
