Things I didn't do in 2014 (that I was disappointed I didn't accomplish)

I wrote last week about some of the things I managed to cross off my 101 in 1001 goals list. It was quite a bit! While I'm happy with all of the things I did manage to accomplish, there were quite a few things that I wanted to do that didn't happen, some big, some small. I'm writing the ones here that I wanted to get done the most, and the ones that I will work hardest on in the coming year (or two).

Buy a house
If you've been reading for a while, then you'll know that Derek and I started (seriously) looking for a house to buy in February of last year. Then I got an apartment and we put looking for a house on hold. Then we got engaged and knew my lease would be running out and started looking again in a little different direction. Needless to say, it didn't happen for us. Thankfully we were able to find a place to live - for as long as we need - at a reasonable price. This year, we hope to get back on the ball and find us a forever home.

Run five 5k races
I'm cutting myself a little slack on this one because I did run in two triathlons and one of them included a 5k. But only a little slack, because there were plenty of other 5Ks I could have participated in but chose not to because I had other things to do, didn't want to wake up early, etc. This year though, it is on like donkey kong!

Host a game night
One of my favorite things is playing games - cards, dice, board games, it doesn't matter. Some of my favorites are Zonk (dice), Cards Against Humanity (I still need to buy my own set), and good ole Spades. Growing up, my parents hosted a game night every Wednesday. It was a standing tradition that they upheld until we moved half way across the country. I want to have that tradition with our friends as well. Maybe not weekly, but at least once a month or so.

Go to the Caribbean
I really wanted to do this for our honeymoon, but due to some scheduling conflicts, we had to keep it short, sweet, and stateside. This coming summer our "big" vacation will be going to British Columbia, along with a few smaller/long weekend travelling here and there and hopefully we'll get to go somewhere tropical in 2016.

Make an emergency kit for the car
I've had this on my list for almost two years now and still haven't done it. It's probably a really simple task, I just haven't gotten off my butt to get it finished. I really want to though - especially since I've got a brand new car to put it in. What are your suggestions for an "emergency" kit?

Send a handwritten letter
Another simple thing that I just have to sit down and make time to do. Host Thanksgiving This just ties in to not owning a home to have my own Thanksgiving dinner! Unfortunately, I don't think my 500 square foot apartment would have held many friends/family members.

Join a church
After living in Montgomery for over two years I'm a little ashamed to say we/I still haven't found a church to call home. Partly because I still feel attached to my old church I attended with my parents, and partly because looking for a new church (that we both enjoy and feel "at home" in) is a little scary and daunting. If you've every had to start from scratch, what did you do to find a church? Trial and error? Go with friends? I'm lost!

What are some things that you wanted to get crossed off your list but didn't manage to? How do you plan to make those goals a priority this year?

My mom made me my emergency car kit! It's got tire "filler", a blanket, pressure gauge, bottle of water, granola bar or two, flashlight that also blinks, and kitty litter. This is more geared toward winter, but I just leave it in my car year round!

Finding a home church is definitely hard when you've been going to what you feel is your home for the majority of your life. When my husband and I moved to Birmingham, it was a daunting task. It took us almost a year and a half to find somewhere we enjoyed. I often wonder if it will ever feel like home though. All that to say, my only word of advice is to just go and try a bunch of different ones. When it's all done, I can promise you will have some funny and interesting story to tell. To the point, that one time we visited a church we got sticky name tags to wear.

I moved from north Alabama down to Tuscaloosa when I got married and don't know a soul here except for a few of my husbands coworkers. Finding a church has been a top priority for me so I can meet people and form new relationships, but it's a lot harder than I thought it would be. I went to the same church from birth until I moved down here at 25 years old. It was hard to imagine finding another church that would work and make me feel at home like my old one did. I come from a non denominational Christian background, and unfortunately there aren't any of those types of churches here so I've had to figure out what aspects of church are actually important to me and what I can live without. We visited a couple of churches a few times, but nothing ever felt "right". I guess not having a church home was weighing on my heart the other day because I said a short prayer about it on my way to Walmart. After leaving Walmart I went to publix, and a lady came up to me in one of the aisles and invited me to her church which was across the street and happened to be one we had been looking at to visit. We visited it yesterday, and really liked it so we'll continue to visit and next week we'll go to Sunday school. So, with all that being said, my advice would be to figure out what type of church you want to visit, look at their website if they have one to see what kinds of activities they have, classes/small groups, their beliefs, etc. if it sounds like something you might like, just go! And pray about it. I honestly don't think that lady coming up to me no more than an hour after I said my prayer was a coincidence.

Ugh ... finding a church when you move ... I so struggle with this! I get SO intimidated! I just moved in Aug. and I really want to find a church in my new town. Yes, I could drive the 30-ish minutes and go to my old church, but I'm trying to meet new people here. I don't have friends IN town yet though. I hate going alone, it's even more intimidating, so I most often just put it off. This is a goal of mine for 2015 as well. I want a good church home! Good luck in your search!

One of our goals is to find a church this year as well! It is so hard and very intimidating. I think trial and error is honestly the best. Good luck!!

I always do a book, a jar of peanut butter, flashlight, paper towel roll, kitty litter, a blanket, and one of those kits that has jumper cables and some other stuff.

Finding a church here in Shanghai was really scary/intimidating, but I'm glad I asked around and found one that I really like, because I love it! My best suggestion is to ask coworkers and friends for their suggestions!

Love this list - you've inspired me to get cracking on my stuff for 2015! Car emergency kit is on mine as well. We can do this!

I just recently joined a new church after moving to a new city at the end of last year. It was one of the weirdest, most awkward and intimidating things! I visited about three different churches before I visited the one I joined. Sometimes I went with friends, sometimes I went alone (which was VERY intimidating for me.)But, I knew that I wanted a place that was friendly and had someone reach out to me personally. Also, the church that the Lord led me to is a lot like the one that I went to while in college. It was the only one I visited that felt like home.
